Today in the age of communication and technology, the teachings of the Church are readily available to be read and put into practice. Sacred Scripture, especially the New Jerusalem, New American, and Revised Standard Version translations, are useful for study as well as prayer. The Catechism of the Catholic Church has clear and beautiful explanations of the truths of the faith. In addition to the Catechism, the documents of Vatican II spell out who the Church is in our modern world, and what role we are to play.

So Scripture, the Catechism and documents of Vatican II can become friendly guides and references as we come to know and love the Church deeper. Participating in Bible studies, workshops and conferences on various topics of faith also deepen our understanding, and help our commitments to follow Jesus. The teaching authority of each bishop is shared with the local pastor, who assists in interpreting the teachings of the Church as we live out our faith day by day.

Mindful of Christ’s words to his apostles, ‘He who hears you, hears me,’ [Lk 10:16] the faithful receive with docility the teachings and directives that their pastors give them in different forms." CCC 87
